Research Description

The Price Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia has two major areas of research interest. The first centers on the use of image-guided focused ultrasound for targeted drug and gene delivery. Specific projects entail using MRI-guided focused ultrasound to deliver gene- and drug-bearing nanoparticles across the blood-brain barrier to both treat brain tumors and reverse neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease. In a similar vein, we are also actively investigating how the thermal and mechanical effects created by certain regimes of focused ultrasound can be used to elicit anti-tumor immune responses against breast cancer and melanoma. The second major area of research in the lab is vascular biomechanics. Here, our emphasis is on identifying the mechanisms through which epigenetic factors regulate collateral blood vessel growth and then using this information to develop new gene therapy approaches for treating peripheral arterial disease. Our research is highly collaborative. We work closely with UVa investigators in Radiology, the Human Immunotherapy Center, Neuro-oncology, and Cardiovascular Medicine, and we have a long-standing collaboration with investigators in the Johns Hopkins Center for Nanomedicine
